User attributes and properties

When creating user accounts with UserManagemeNT, the new user accounts can get multiple attributes and properties. Examples of these attributes and properties are the name of the user account, the description, home directory and so on. With UserManagemeNT, the values for these attributes and properties are specified in different ways: directly entered in the fields of the Create user tab, or indirectly by the using the general template or user templates. By using keywords, the values are specified only once, and then used in different other attributes and properties.

For many environments the Create user tab offers enough flexibility to specify all of the attributes and properties. But with Windows 2000 and the Active Directory, more and more attributes and properties can be specified for new user accounts. For instance, with Active Directory, with each user account you can associate information regarding the office of the employee, phone numbers, address information and so on. To be able to specify all this information for user accounts, a new window is introduced in UserManagemeNT: User attributes and properties. To configure the User attributes and properties window, see Specifying user attributes and properties. To get more background information first, continue reading.

The User attributes and properties window is visible only when the Create user tab is the active window. You can configure the fields that can be specified with the window. These fields can be Windows 2000 Active Directory fields or keywords.

Active Directory fields

When using Active Directory fields, the values specified for these fields are used when new Active Directory user accounts are created. For Windows NT 4.0 user accounts, these fields are ignored. You can for instance use these fields to specify phone numbers, address information and so on. With each field, a LDAP display name is associated. This is the LDAP display name of the attribute or property of the Active Directory schema. This name is used to specify the attribute when a new user account is created. A number of Active Directory attributes are specified in UserManagemeNT. Examples of these attributes are Title, WEB-page, Office, Manager, Company and so on. For these attributes, the LDAP display name is also specified. You should not change the LDAP-display-name of the pre-configured attributes if you are not absolutely sure. By default, all attributes that you can specify with the Windows 2000 Active Directory Users and Computers MMC application are pre-configured. But with UserManagemeNT, you can also specify other attributes from the Active Directory schema.

Keywords

Keywords are used to specify a value only once. In other fields, the keyword is used. When a value for the keyword is specified, this value is used in all other fields containing the keyword. Basically, UserManagemeNT uses a number of keywords, for %DEPARTMENT%, %DOMAIN%, %FULL_NAME% and so on. See Keyword in names for a complete list of the pre-defined keyword. With the User attributes and properties you can specify your own keywords. These keywords can be used in all fields that are used to “calculate” the values for all attributes and properties when a new user account is created. You specify the actual value of the keywords in the User attributes and properties window. When the Apply button of the Create user tab is pressed, all attribute specifications containing the keywords are updated.

You can size the User attributes and properties window. The actual position of the window is stored automatically and recovered when UserManagemeNT starts.
