Installing a SpaceGuard SRM service

To install a SpaceGuard SRM service, locate the computer you want to use to manage quota's. When you try to expand the tree to show the computer's disks, SpaceGuard SRM will display a message asking you permission to install a service on the target computer. When you choose "Yes", the SpaceGuard SRM - Service Setup dialog will appear.

The SpaceGuard SRM - Service Setup dialog is used to install and upgrade the SpaceGuard SRM service on the local and remote computers. See requirements to find what computer you can install the service on. To start this dialog manually, start the SpaceGuard SRM client, browse in the network tree to locate the computer, right click the mouse and select "Service Management", "Install/Remove...".

The SpaceGuard SRM - Service Setup dialog has two forms, Basic and Advanced. In the Basic version only the Servername and Serial fields are visible.

To switch between Basic and Advanced mode press the Advanced button. When running in (default) Basic mode SpaceGuard SRM will fill in defaults for all extra fields specified in the Advanced section. If you are a member of the Domain Admins group of the domain you are logged on to all default settings will be fine. Otherwise, you need to change some of the fields. If you are upgrading instead of installing a SpaceGuard SRM service most service options that can be specified in this dialog will not be changed (see below). Instead, SpaceGuard SRM will continue to use the current settings.

Server name(s)

The name of the computer(s) you want to install or upgrade the service on. Note that this computer can run Windows NT 4.0 workstation and Windows 2000 Professional as well. You can specify multiple computers separated by comma's (,) as well. Example: Tulip, Rose.

Service serial number

The SpaceGuard SRM license serial number. For test purposes, you can specify the word DEMO. The license number is a 30-digit number you obtain from your SpaceGuard SRM reseller. To upgrade from a demo version to a purchased version you need to fill in the license code serial number here. For more information on SpaceGuard SRM licensing, see the section Demo and purchased version.

User name

The Windows 2000 or Windows NT user account name that will be used by the SpaceGuard SRM service. If the account does not exist SpaceGuard SRM will create it with the password specified in the next field. By default, SpaceGuard SRM will create the account SpaceGuardSvcAccnt in the domain you are logged on to. If the account already exists the password specified in the next field must be correct. Otherwise, the SpaceGuard SRM service will not start. The syntax of the service account specification is DOMAIN\ACCOUNTNAME. For Windows 2000 domains you must use the NETBIOS domain name. If you want to use a local machine account, e.g. not a domain account but an Windows NT 4.0 workstation or Windows 2000 Professional account name, you should use the syntax \\COMPUTERNAME\ACCOUNTNAME. When upgrading, this field is not used.

Password

The password of the service account specified in the field User name. If the specified User name already exists the password must be correct. If SpaceGuard SRM creates the account, the password of the new account is specified in this field. When upgrading, this field is not used.

Group (Service account group membership)

The SpaceGuard SRM service account will be added to this group. By default, the Domain Admins group is used. This setting is used to grant the SpaceGuard SRM service sufficient access rights to retrieve information from all monitored objects and to execute alarm actions. If the SpaceGuard SRM service account does not have sufficient access rights error messages will appear in the computer Application event log, and in the SpaceGuard SRM client window.

Group (SpaceGuard administrator group)

This group is used to specify the user accounts that are allowed to configure the SpaceGuard SRM service. By default, the group is set to the local administrators group. The way this is organized is comparable to the way you setup access control for files and directories.

Directory

This field contains the directory where SpaceGuard SRM will install the SpaceGuard SRM service software. Note that the specification is relative to the remote computer, e.g. C:\... means the directory C:\ on the computer where the SpaceGuard SRM client is going to be installed. By default, SpaceGuard SRM searches for a drive and directory with enough available free disk space which is accessible through an administrative share (e.g., \\COMPUTER\C$).

Site

Use this field only when you have a valid SpaceGuard SRM site license. If this is the case, specify the name of the licensed 'site' in this field.

Start the service immediately after the installation

If you want the SpaceGuard SRM service to start immediately after it has been installed, check this item. By default, the option is enabled.

Enable cluster software

If you want to use the cluster functionality of the SpaceGuard SRM service you must enable this option. This option makes the SpaceGuard SRM service dependent on the cluster service. By default, the option is disabled.

Close

Press to close this dialog.

Install

Press this button to start installing the SpaceGuard SRM service according to the specified settings.

Upgrade

Press this button to start upgrading the SpaceGuard SRM service. Note that you don't need to specify any advanced settings to upgrade an installed service, only a servername and (optional) a license key is required.

Remove

Press this button to start removing the SpaceGuard SRM service from the specified computer(s). If you select this option, all input fields except the Server name(s) field are ignored.

Advanced
